Billy Strings Biography
Billy Strings, born William Apostol, is a Grammy Award-winning guitarist and singer from Muir, Michigan. Blending traditional bluegrass with progressive bluegrass and jamgrass, he is known for precise flatpicking, adventurous improvisation, and live performances that can move from acoustic bluegrass into extended jams.
His 2019 album Home won the Grammy Award for Best Bluegrass Album in 2021, while Live Vol. 1 earned the same award in 2025. Other releases include Renewal and Me/And/Dad, a collaboration with his father, Terry Barber. Popular songs include “Dust in a Baggie,” “Taking Water,” “Heartbeat of America,” “California Sober,” and “Away From the Mire.” Rotating setlists mean individual performances can vary, with traditional covers and extended instrumental passages also part of the mix.

Billy Strings San Jose reviews
wait, what did she say?
Nick's guitar drowned out almost everything else, and while I'm a massive fan of him and his playing, I went to see the Billy Strings, not the Nick show. For an artist well known for her ability to leap effortlessly from a whisper through a grown to a snarling, shrieking scream, you'd figure that the audio crew would have made damned sure that the vocals were dialed in and solid - but from my vantage point (less than 10 feet to the right of the FOH audio console), her vocals were a drag. The only time I could hear her well was when she screamed (which sounded absolutely perfect). It shouldn't have been difficult to hear Karen O, but it was.
